“It is necessary, especially for Americans, to see other lands and experience other cultures. The American, living in this vast country and able to traverse three thousand miles east to west using the same language, needs to hear languages as they collide in Europe, Africa, and Asia.” — Dr. Maya Angelou
It is hard to convey emotions regarding cancelled trips when serious matters are happening.
But, for many, traveling is a way of life. It is one of the reasons I started Tourism&Tales, to experience the joy of planning trips with clients. These moments are transformative, and while traveling is on hold, here are three ideas to prep for your next adventure:
1. LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE
It is refreshing to know how to communicate with locals while you are in their country. They do not expect travelers to be fluent in their language, but knowing how to say “hello,” “goodbye,” and “thank you” goes a long way. It will help incase you need to order food, a taxi ride, or ask for assistance. Imagine not being able to explain your allergies to a waiter or doctor. The more you know, the better.
2. UPGRADE YOUR LUGGAGE
I have been pulling my faux crocodile leather luggage set for over seven years. Though withstanding occasional trips, an upgrade is needed. Luggage brands are having sales, some up to 70% off!
If you have time to shop online, look into buying a new luggage set and introduce it to the airport once outside opens.
3. COOK A CULTURAL DISH
A dish from your favorite destination can be a nice reminder until you're able to travel again. Experiencing new cultural food is one of my favorite things about traveling. Immerse yourself in local life for authentic tastes. While we're on lockdown, find a recipe and try to make the cultural dishes!
Even if you haven't had the chance to travel internationally, have a go at one of these dishes:
elote (Mexico), jerk chicken (Jamaica), crème brûlée (France) or falafel (Middle East).
It is best to get your ingredients from ethnic grocery stores to support your local businesses.
